It is important to understand that psychology conceptualizes nature and nurture in a way that emphasizes their inseparability and complementarity, not their distinctiveness. This concept is known as epigenesist. It is not nature vs. nurture, but rather nature through nurture. Remember that nature relates to genetics and nurture relates to environment.
Describe at least one significant life event that has made someone you admire the individual that they are today and fit it under one or more of these categories:
Biology
Environment
Mental processes
Social World
Culture
Individual Variations

The study of epigenetics is a very interesting topic of study. I believe the main points are that we can have variations in our DNA and how the environment can make some traits dormant and others more predominant depending on various factors.
I am going to write about my son, Zay. He is 16 and a half (he would want me to add the half) and has Autism Spectrum Disorder. Not only is ASD thought to be multiple genetic variations, in some cases, they also believe that the environment of a mother’s womb can affect the fetus and create a more susceptible environment that may contribute to the development of autism.
That alone is a great topic with multiple articles written about epigenetics and autism. I am going to focus on a life event that has affect our oldest son and has nurtured a fight in him. Eleven years after Zay was born we finally decided to have a second child, Zeke. Zeke also has ASD but unlike his brother who is slightly autistic or what people consider to be high functioning, Zeke was classically autistic and clearly disabled. Zay really struggled with the idea of them both being autistic and how they were terribly different. He struggled with his identity of autism and others viewed him because of how he was now viewing his brother. At times it made him proud of all the work he did and continues to do to be in where he is socially and academically. Other days he was so discouraged and failed to see himself as anything more than dysfunctional. I really believe the way he is faced with his own developmental differences and having a reflection of them in our own home has stretched my child Zay to grow beyond belief.
Zay can be very matter of fact and black and white, but Zeke makes him see the variation in autism. As well, compassion is sometime something Zay struggles with and Zeke has given him eyes to see why compassion and inclusion is necessary. He sees his brother work so hard for thing that come natural to most and work with determination, knowing that he was similar as a child doing so many therapies and special education classes. He also sees the need for empathy and acceptance because he can see his little brother struggle with playmates and fail socially. Instead of hiding who Zay is or the fact that this brother is different he is learning that inclusion and acceptance is necessary for his own confidence and self-worth. It has been a hard road for this kid. He has worked so much just always slightly to a different beat then the average kid, but the biggest challenge that has helped him grow was his little brother who is a mirror of autism. He is exactly the therapy he needed.
I admire so much the love and awe he has for his little brother, who is not always easy to handle but is always easy to love. I admire the way he has been grown and has been challenged to see himself.
I found this short video and hope you take the time to watch it.
