Paper 1-For this essay you can use the online version of Suetonius’s biography of Augustus Caesar, written in 121 while he was a personal secretary for Emperor Hadrian. I have posted it for you. Answer the following question: What was Augustus like as a leader, according to Suetonius? What was he like as a person (if the two can be distinguished)? What message is this work trying to send? You have three points here to address so draw conclusions and use examples from the reading to make your case. There are issues in using Suetonius but that is not your concern. The purpose of this essay is to show how well you can read and analyze a source and how well you can make an argument using evidence from it. You need to do this in 800-1100 words. You may use Nagle for some context but do not do research otherwise and you must not cite Nagle. Cite Suetonius parenthetically by section, ex. (76), for examples and quotes. Since you have been given your source and you can’t do research, no bibliography is required. Provide evidence to support your comments/conclusions. Do not make general, unsupported statements. The paper must not consist of strings of quotes and in fact only two short ones are allowed.
Paper 2-Answer the required question in an essay of between 1200-1500 words. Each essay must have a developed introduction with strong thesis, body with points, and separate conclusion. Students should construct a thesis for each essay that will enable them to answer the required question(s) in the stipulated length. The essays must be well-organized, well-written, and well-argued with a good balance of generalizations and specifics. The essays MUST NOT BE summaries of the chapters. By looking at the question and focusing on the question, students should be able to avoid this trap. Question: One question that has entertained historians for centuries concerns the “fall” of the Roman Empire. Certainly there were endemic problems, and philosophers of history like to examine the inevitability of a collapse of a 1000-year old political entity. However, two of the main reasons include the rise of Christianity and the influx of the Germans. Using Nagle, the excerpt from the classic Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon, the film on Constantine, and the primary source excerpts (“Fall of Rome” sources), do the following.
Consider three reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire addressing the rise of Christianity, the influx of the Germans, and one other reason of your choice. What was the most important reason and why? Cite from items as per (Gibbon) or (Tacitus) or (Film) or whatever. The scoring guidelines have been re-worded (to limit your dependence on Nagle, though such dependence was always problematic) so make sure you look at them.
Paper 3- Movie Response: Constantine
Watch the movie, read the Sowards chapter on Constantine, and answer this question: What are the similarities between the movie's interpretation of Constantine and that of the scholars? Are there any differences? Have a well-developed essay of between 700 and 1000 words, citing as per author and page number or item as appropriate, so (Movie) or (Sowards, 217). This should be well-written but the main purpose is content, so consider the following scoring guidelines:
Citations: 5 points
Comprehension and Argument from Reading/Watching: 25 points
Writing: plus or minus up to 5 points, where well-written essays can earn up to +5 and poorly written (or poorly edited) essays are penalized up to -5. Follow the General Guidelines. Essays without the proper citations may also lose points here.
