Final Paper 400 points
Final Minimum Length: 6 pages
Minimum number of sources: 4
Purpose: Argumentative
While you may have sections of the paper that are informative (i.e. providing background information about your chosen topic), the overall purpose of the paper is to argue either the cause of, the solution to, or in some cases the existence of, the social justice problem you’ve identified. Your paper should demonstrate what you have learned about writing effective arguments and making appropriate rhetorical choices based on your audience and purpose.
Ethos: You should demonstrate credibility by proving yourself knowledgeable on the topic. Use reliable sources and credit them correctly. Demonstrate that you are well-educated. Use correct grammar and spelling and format your paper in standard MLA format. Reveal your biases up front and, if you have a personal connection to the topic, let the reader know that.
Pathos: Use appropriate emotional appeals. Use evocative language, strong description, and (if appropriate) evoke sympathy for those impacted through humanizing anecdotes. Remember that relying too heavily on emotional appeals can begin to feel manipulative to your readers.
Logos: You must develop a strong logical argument with good supporting evidence that is based on fact. Be certain that your reasoning is clear and that your paper is well-organized, beginning with a focused and arguable thesis. You must acknowledge opposing arguments and provide reasoned rebuttals (and concessions as appropriate). Remember that your imagined readers lean toward the opposition so be respectful in both framing and refuting the opposing arguments. Whenever possible, identify shared values or goals that can serve as common ground to base your arguments on.
