Citizen A (the defiant citizen) complains, “I don’t understand why the U.S. government doesn’t get anything done! It’s outrageous. Politicians are all out for themselves, there’s no accountability, and the federal government should leave more decisions to the states. This simply isn’t working! It’s time for a new government.”
Citizen B (the complacent citizen) responds, “I disagree. In many ways the U.S. government is working exactly how it was designed to work and has evolved logically from first principles laid out at the Constitutional Convention in 1787.”
Which of these arguments is more correct, that of the defiant citizen or the complacent one? In a 5-7 page paper that makes explicit references to U.S. political history as well at the current political environment make the case that one of these arguments is better than the other. Of course, there are merits to both arguments. You should acknowledge as much in your essay. However, at some point one argument is more compelling than the other. Your answer should not be an opinion, but something that you can clearly demonstrate using the knowledge you have gained over the course of the term.
