1 page essay. Telomeres form the ends of chromosomes and protect the coding portion of the DNA from degradation, and in so doing, they decrease in length with age (and successive cell divisions). Telomeres are therefore related to the aging process in humans, and to evolution. Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn won a Nobel Prize in 2009 for her work on telomeres. She has since started a company, Teloyears, which allows a person to obtain and submit their own DNA sample from home that can help to approximate one’s biological age (which may be different from one’s chronological age, as in, actual number of years since one’s birth.
