We are now focusing on changes and problems that occur during adulthood, specifically during what is deemed “middle-aged.” Erickson specifies this time of life between the ages of 40 and 65. There are so many different issues and events that happen during this time! You are welcome to discuss some specific examples you have witnessed from those around you going through this stage. If you happen to fall into this category, please don't hesitate to share your own personal examples as well!
Some of the changes that came to my mind include changes to health, sexuality, processing of information, attention, memory and problem-solving. Individuals bodies are changing in many ways during this time, including going through menopause, vision, hearing and overall body makeup. Relationships often change during this time including divorce, parenting, friendship and caring for aging parents. At the end of this stage, individuals are also planning their own retirement.
The development of diseases also increases, as well as overall self-perceptions. All of these different items I have listed will contribute to the idea of “generativity vs. stagnation” and I look forward to hearing your thoughts about this topic!
