Without a strategic plan, performance management would not be successful. Although alignment of an organization’s goals and objectives is important, it is also important to ensure that employees’ behaviors, results, and development plans align with the organization’s vision and mission. This alignment should resonate in each business unit as well. So, how does the organization get started? Performing an environment analysis influences internal and external trends. This may also play a role in the organization structure and specific processes as well as the economic and technological aspects of the organization. These trends can then be translated to opportunities or threats. Once this exercise is completed, you may perform a gap analysis to assist in developing action plans and further strategies.
Be sure to review Chapters 2 and 3 of the textbook Performance Management by Aguinis (2013). Then, imagine you are an executive at your work place. As an alternative, you may also research an organization using the Internet. Address the following:
List 2–3 strategic goals of Wal-Mart you, and examine the strategic direction of the organization.Describe how the goals align with the organization’s mission and vision.If there are gaps, explain the steps that should be taken to align the strategic plan to the organization’s purpose.
