Topic: Culture, Values and History of Appalachia; discussion of writing assignment
Homework:
find the reading from the internet Read: The Red Mule by Jesse Stuart and selected poems in Manning
Writing: In Red Mule and Manning, there is a tension that drives the stories. For this assignment, making use of the Social-Epistemic Reading Model, define, using the writers words and examples, what/who the two conflicting “nomenclatures” are. Then, using the context of the narrative, how these nomenclatures relate to and conflict with one another, what deeper theme do they represent? Finally, based on the narrative’s depiction of the nomenclatures, what is the ideal “circumstance” the author is arguing for? What is his “ontology”? Even though we are reading Manning, I would like for this paper to focus on Stuart. Use Manning as a “secondary text,” as needed. (3-pages)
