For this exercise we will use data from the official data from the year 2000 for each state as reported by the UCR and U.S. Census. The data set is called “states2000.sav”. There are four major parts to this assignment.Be sure to respond to each part in its entirety. First, what is the overall burglary rate among the states? Report the mean and standard deviation to summarize your findings. To describe what is typical report the mean and the scores that make the lower and upper boundaries of a one standard deviation spread (the mean ± standard deviation) into your electronic document. Use the variable called “burglary” in the data set. Second, does the burglary rate differ by region of the country? Continue examining the “burglary” variable in the data set, but separate the mean burglary rates by the categories found in the “region” variable (South, West, Midwest, Northeast). Generate an appropriate graph/table to depict this relationship. Copy and paste the table/graph into your document. Interpret the results. Discuss the specific means for each region describing what is depicted in your graph/table. Where is the highest mean? The lowest? etc. Third, when examining the burglary rates for each region, which group has the greatest amount of variability? Generate a boxplot of the “burglary” variable by each category found in the “region” variable. Copy and paste the results into your document. Interpret the results depicted in the graph. Which group has the greatest amount of spread? How do you know it has the most amount of spread? Which group has the least amount of variability? What evidence can you point to from the boxplot to support your interpretation? Fourth, which mean is most representative of the region? Support your answer with evidence from the analyses you have performed above. When responding to the prompts below be sure to type the answers and copy & paste the necessary information into an electronic document that is saved as a .pdf or .docx file.
