The international ethical code called The Declaration of Helsinki echoed principles in the Nuremberg Code but also breaks some new ground as well. In addition to affirming the importance of informed consent, it provides guidelines for conducting research on subjects who cannot give their informed consent, insists on the review of research protocols by “independent committees,” discusses the use of placebo controls, and declares that “considerations related to the well-being of the human subject should take precedence over the interests of science and society.” What balance does the code strike between the interests of science or society and those of human subjects? And how do these issues related to the "ethical bind" described by Hellman and Hellman in “Of Mice but Not Men: Problems of the Randomized Clinical Trial?"
