Writing: Coal Mining is one of the “mythical” depictions of Appalachia. If you believe the Mass Media narratives, every mountain person has dug coal. Interestingly, Appalachia does have a love/hate relationship with ‘King Coal” and especially the business practices and attitudes that started with the early coal companies. Using the Social-Epistemic reading model, how does Giardina depict coal, coal mining, and coal company business? If “King Coal” is a character, who stands in opposition to it? How? Who stands with it? How? Examine the motives, attitudes and actions of select characters in the narrative to make and support your point. (2 pages)
