Instruction
For this week’s assignment, I would like you to write some descriptive paragraphs
about a photograph. This photograph can be one you took or one you found in a
magazine or online. Please include the photo with your writing.
In your response make sure you use descriptive writing. Descriptive writing uses
the words that invoke the five senses. Use your words to make someone see, feel,
hear, taste and touch the elements presented in the picture. You do not need to use
all of the senses, but please make sure you are providing plenty of imagery. Give me
something fun to read.
Second, I would like you to use at least three examples of literary elements in your
essay. As we discussed in class, literary elements allow the author paint a picture
for the reader. The reader can connect to what is being described by following the
author’s hints.
The following are some examples of literary terms:
Simile – Comparison of two objects using like or as.
Example - Her hair was as smooth as silk.
Metaphor – Direct comparison of two object that are similar in some way.
Example – The wheels of justice turn slowly.
Allusion – Referring to something in culture (literature, history, music, etc) to add
emphasis to your sentence.
Example – Who do you think you are - Odysseus? Why did it take you so long to turn in your homework?
Example – Adam Levine, Maroon 5 front man, brags that he has “Moves Like Jagger.” Do you think he can really dance, kiss or sing as well as the Mick Jagger, the British rock star?
Hyperbole – Using exaggeration to influence your audience.
Example – My wicked writing teacher made us complete 200 worksheets last week.
Alliteration – The deliberate repetition of a consonant letter in sentence or
paragraph.
Example – The silly students stubbornly wanted simple sentences on their grammar sheets.
Parallelism – The use of word patterns and repeated sentences in writing.
Example – A great example of this is Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream” speech. He repeats the phrase over twenty times to emphasis he hopes for the future.
Example – I came, I saw, I concurred.
