Instruction
This activity asks you to consider Antigone from Antigone and Nora from A Doll’s House as examples of characters torn between doing what they feel is right and necessary and the dictates of governmental law and social custom. Both characters break the law but have reasons for doing so.
View the following clips from a production of A Doll’s House starring Christopher Plummer and Julie Harris to give you a sense of how this play has been performed. Finally, watch the clip from Antigone starring Irene Papas. You’ll get a real sense of Greek tragedy as you watch Antigone sealed away in a tomb.

A perennial human dilemma is whether we should obey governments and man-made law or act on a belief in eternal law or God’s law. Often what we deem as right and necessary conflicts with the status quo and social norms. Consider some famous examples— Henry David Thoreau on Civil Disobedience, Ghandi in India. Martin Luther King,Jr, and many civil rights and anti war protestors. Disobedience has consequences—fines, punishment, even death. Why would an individual risk his life reputation, earthly fortune for a belief or appeal to conscience?
Discuss in what ways Antigone and Nora break the law and their justifications for breaking the law. Consider those who oppose them [Creon with his law and order speech; Nora’s husband about reputation, never borrowing money, a wife’s duties]. Does the opposition have any valid arguments? What consequences clearly followed from breaking the law and what is your final judgment or conclusion about the situations expressed in the plays?
