Topic: “The Mine Wars” (video); Storming Heaven (part1)
Homework:
Read: Finish Storming Heaven
Writing: This week, we watched a documentary on the real events that inspired Storming Heaven. This assignment is a little more open ended than the others. I want you to consider the “real life” events depicted in the video and the events as depicted in the novel. Remember, both are literary constructs meant to “select, reflect, and deflect” reality. Taking into consideration the idea that coal mining is so semioticly linked to Appalachia, what do these two texts “tell” you about Appalachia? For this first part, you need to be phenomenological…look to your emotions/ What surprised you? Made you laugh” Made you angry? What was familiar…still happening now? Try to account for how these texts and your reactions add to yur growing understanding of Appalachia. Then, link this idea to one of the values defined by Welch and explain how your attitude is related to that value. (2 pages)
