Instruction
C) Critical Review: Each student is to write a 3-5 page critical review of the articles on sex by Andrew Greeley (“Sex” and “Premarital Sex” on Canvas )and William F. May (“Four Mischievous Theories of Sex,” chapter 16 of the Perspectives book), assigned for Week 5 (see below). The critical review is to have this structure: 1) the authors’ theses, 2) The critical review will state the author’s purpose in writing: either didactic ¾ to teach something, or rhetorical ¾ to move the reader to a feeling or decision. [May or Greeley may, in fact, have both types of purpose in mind. If you conclude this is true, give examples of both.] 3) the authors’ arguments in promotion of their theses, 4) a critical appraisal of the authors’ arguments in comparison and contrast, concluding with a judgment as to the cogency and rational persuasiveness of the authors’ theses, and 5) a personal response to the articles. Nos. 3) and 4) are the center of the critical review. No paper that focuses primarily on the student’s emotional response to the articles will be acceptable. A superior review will be well written, have all the elements enumerated above, and will demonstrate the student’s judgment as to the force of the authors’ positions. The Critical Review is due September 27.
