  • For the Essay Prompts: Those are the requirements: Please respond to two of the Essay Prompts by writing a short essay with an introduction, body, and closing. Each of your responding essays should be an argument designed to convince your audience of your opinion. Cite specific, relevant information from the reading selection. Citing, in this case, means quoting directly, paraphrasing, or summarizing from the text. It is not necessary to parenthetically cite; identify only the author’s name and the title of the reading selection once in each essay response. Make sure that you respond to all parts of the essay question.

  • no. 21 . The Ducks located at the Central Park Lagoon have been used symbolically in the novel. The concern for the ducks by Holden reveals so much about his state of emotion and the thoughts he has towards life in general. He wonders how ducks are able to survive during winter. The red Hunting Hat also bears symbolism. Through out the book, whenever Holden put on the red hat, it had to be mentioned. The red color of his hat resembled his siblings’ hair. It had a feeling that probably the hat was one way of maintaining a mutual connection with them.

  • 22. Nothing in The Catcher in the Rye signals Holden’s misinterpretation of the meaning of childhood and adulthood more precisely than the title itself. As he roams around New York City, Holden compares what he perceives as the uncorrupted innocence of children to the hypocrisy of maturity. He considers almost every adult he meets to be a phony, and repeatedly states his fear of turning into a phony himself. Conversely, children represent purity to him, and his desire to return to the innocent state of his own childhood.

  • 22. The book’s title stems from a scene in Chapter 16 when Holden observes a young boy who, ignored by his parents, walks in the street while singing “If a body catch a body coming through the rye.” Holden interprets this scene as a perfect expression of the innocence of youth. The fact that the boy walks in the street rather than on the sidewalk indicates that, for now at least, he exists in a world that is parallel to yet separate from that of his parents. Watching the boy gives Holden a reprieve from the phoniness of the adult world.

  • 23. The Catcher in the Rye depicts a short span in the life of a sixteen-year-old boy who has a lot to say about others yet recognizes little about himself. Holden Caulfield is not your typical bildungsroman protagonist. He would probably like that title; it confirms he’s not archetypal, not phony, and not a bore. Throughout the story, his cynicism and eccentric thoughts reflect his alienation, and often his tone is downright depressing. From open to close, the story only details a few days of Holden’s life. His past is never quite uncovered, and even in the final chapter he does not give readers any indication of self-fulfillment. While this novel is termed a bildungsroman, many may question if Holden Caulfield ever comes of age.

  • 23. While this story does not have an obvious climax or even a point in time where the reader sees Holden’s growth, there is possibility for development. Even though Holden represents the extreme case of not wanting to grow up, he is not Peter Pan. He will eventually be forced out of childhood. It may not be much, but in the final words of the book, Holden says, “Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody” (Salinger 214). This shows some growth in his character. He actually admits to having feelings. He may not ever have a major epiphany or self-actualization, but Holden Caulfield will figure things out — just in his own time and certainly in his own way.

  • 21. Introduction Holden's fixation on the ducks is also a symbol of his struggle with change and growing up. He wants things to stay the same, but the ducks prove that one must adapt to the environment, that one has to change in order to survive. At the same time, the ducks offer hope: though they disappear each winter, they always reappear.

  • 22. It is a greatest work, a tale of growing up in a shallow world obsessed with the superficial. Wherever he looks Holden Caulfield sees corruption, vulgarity, and superficiality in adults. It is only in children he sees traits he admires such as innocence kindness and the ability to be true to themselves. It is in regard to these things that we see the importance of the title the Catcher in the Rye. Holden believes children’s innocence is ruined by adults, and states that he wants to help them maintain their innocence. The only thing Holden can see himself being is a catcher in the rye, someone that assists children in maintaining their innocence from the dangers of adulthood
