Instruction
Topic: Storming Heaven, continued.
Homework:
Read: “Folk Magic and Protestant Christianity in Appalachia” by John Richards (handout). Read The Mothman Prophecies by John Keel
Writing: Although not written by an Appalachian, John Keel was a good reporter and his The Mothman Prophecies actually is a very fair treatment of the metaphysical mind set of some Appalachian people. For this assignment. I would like for you to consider the roles of ghosts, the past, superstitions, and folk beliefs we have seen in the readings we have done so far (pay close attention to Cunningham from week #2 and Richards from this week). How does Keel’s book exemplify and illustrate some of these folk beliefs? Be clear about what folk-belief(s) you see and how the text illustrates them. Now, put on your speculator’s hat…if we understand “folk belief” as a metaphysics whose meaning has been lost (and thus reduced to superstition), what is a foundational belief of Appalachian metaphysics? Trust the two academic articles mentioned above to guide you. (2-pages)
