Midterm Exam Review For your midterm exam, you will be asked to examine three works of art from the book and write two long descriptive paragraphs about them. Your paragraphs must interpret the art and place it in its proper political and aesthetic context. You must do more than just describe what is in the painting. For example, if you write about Figure 30.7 that there is a man with a beard with a book, you will not be given credit. You must instead write about what the political and aesthetic messages of the painting are. Below you will find three categories containing two works of art each. These are the exact artworks that you will see when you take the exam, which is closed book, in the TLCC. You must select one work of art from each category. The questions below are ones that you should think about and answer when taking your exam. Category 1: Romanticism 1.) Figure 27.9 Wivenhoe Park, Essex 2.) Figure 28.3 Lord Byron Sixth Baron in Albanian Costume What is the relationship between these works and the Romantic period and the Romantic Hero? Are the ideas of Hegel and Darwin reflected in these works in any way? What about Romantic love and Romantic stereotypes? Relate these works to other works of art found in the book. Category 2: Industry and Realism 1.) Figure 30.5 Close No. 193 High Street 2.) Figure 30. 10 The Stone Breakers What is the relationship between these works, industrialization, and the ideas of Marx and Engels? Are the ideas of Marx and Engels reflected in these works in any way? What ideas do these two works share in common with Dickens and other literary figures/works mentioned in chapter 30? What is Realism, and in what regard are these works related to it? Category 3: Modernity 1.) Figure 31.4 Impression: Sunrise 2.) Figure 32.9 Nude Descending a Staircase No.2 Nietzsche is one of the most discussed philosophers at Polk State. What is the relationship between Nietzsche's and Bergson's ideas and these two works?
