The goal of this project is to hone your reading skills of Biblical historical books by focusing on the following issues:
1. the different types of subject matter that are recorded in the Kings I & II (e.g., lengths of reign, royal biography, royal building activity, economic and administrative matters, political and military activities, different matters relating to temple activities and religious practice, the different roles of the prophets, editorial notes and comments).
2. the provenance of the subject matter -- United Monarchy, Judah or Israel
3. the possible sources from which Jeremiah (or the editor) could have gleaned the information he recorded in his compilation of the Book of Kings. Note that the Books of Kings and Chronicles makes reference to non-canonical sources which are no longer available to us, such as :
דברי הימים למלך דוד, ספר דברי שלמה, דברי נתן הנביא, ספר דברי הימים למלכי יהודה ,ספר דברי הימים למלכי ישראל, ספר מלכי ישראל, דברי גד החזה
OUTLINE PROJECT ASSIGNMENTS
Peruse the text of the Book of Kings, noting the following information:
1. concise summary of the chapters of the Book of Kings, including the types of subject matter recorded, such as royal activities of an administrative, economic, political, or military nature; royal activities regarding temple and religion; biographical information; as well as editorial notes and comments;
2. coverage of information pertaining to the United Kingdom, Judah or Israel;
3. possible sources from which Jeremiah (or the editor) may have culled his information, such as royal administrative, economic and political archives, military archives and royal inscriptions, temple archives, royal correspondence, prophetic writings, court literature, royal biographies and kinglists, etc;.
4. different types of editorial comments and notes;
5. the length of kings reigns, and the synchronization data of the kings of Judah and Israel with each other;
6. the name of mentioned foreign kings and the events in which they are associated.
