Instruction
Topic: Mothman continued.
Homework:
Read “The Greenside of Life: Appalachian Magic as a Site of Resistance” by Jack Welch (handout).
Read The Gods of Howl Mountain BY by Taylor Brown pp. 1-144.
Writing: This novel front loads nearly all aspects of Appalachia’s push back against outside culture. From mountain magic, to moonshine, to NASCAR, this books has it all. Having read Welch’s argument for a return to a kind of folk-metaphysics as a means to protect and continue culture, how is Granny’s healing a means to resist and persist as a person? God back and read Manning’s article from week #1—take some time to reflect on what he means by getting “more hillbilly as [you] go.” Then, pay attention to Brown’s crafting of this story. Pay attention to how the relationship between the environment and the characters is presented. What does this tell you about the mindset that leads to the resistance Welch discusses and Granny exemplifies? (2 pages)
What’s Due: reading and writing assignment from last week.
