Instruction
Your response to the following prompt should be at least 500 words and written in MLA format (Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced, appropriate header with your name, my name, course name, and date). A successful response will:
1. Make a specific claim (thesis) about the text.
2. Support the claim with evidence from the text, including at least one direct quote.
3. Be written clearly.
As a fourth, optional, goal, you can try to connect an event in the text with your own personal experiences. I encourage you to be creative with your responses and to use them to explore ideas for possible paper topics.
I strongly discourage referencing online sources to complete the reading responses. Responses that paraphrase interpretations or summaries found online will not receive credit. Remember to avoid excessive summary in general; write your response with the assumption that your audience is familiar with the text and does not require a summary.
Response #3: Choose TWO of this week's short poems--Shakespeare, Marvell, Dickinson, and Duffy--and compare and contrast them. How do the speakers of these poems address the theme of male/female relationships and womanhood? How do their styles compare or differ, and how does that add to the theme or meaning of the poems?
Andrew Marvell, "To His Coy Mistress"
Emily Dickson, "Wild Nights ---Wild Nights!"
William Shakespeare, "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun"
Carol Ann Duffy, "Warming Her Pearls"
