Instruction
Please read over the paper assignment (linked below) if you have not already. Your annotated bibliography should contain 4-6 peer-reviewed sources, no more than 2 of which are by the same author. Please use APA format. I have posted some examples of what the entries might look like as well (linked below). If you think you'll be doing a lot of research in college, it would be useful to learn to use RefWorks (available from the main page of the Library site) to generate your bibliography and then fill in the annotations on your own; alternatively, most databases including Compass have a Cite/Citation button linked to each source (it's the quotation marks button in Compass). Click that, select APA, and copy and paste the citation. For your annotations, don't just copy the abstract: I want to see that you can figure out the research questions, methods, and conclusions on your own (obviously the abstract is a good resource, but you should skim the papers as well).
Here's a guide for how to proceed in doing your research:
1. Pick a general topic. I'll list some examples not because you should choose one of them, but just to give you an idea of how broad or narrow a "topic" is: the history of rock and roll/jazz/hip hop, athletic performance, online education, post-traumatic stress disorder. Choose something that interests you or you will hate writing this paper.
2. Look up that topic in Compass. If you already know you want to focus on a specific discipline like history, psychology, economics, criminology, etc., you can go straight to Databases by subject. Remember to restrict your search to Peer Review and Journal Articles (you can limit to Full Text also, but I caution that some articles that are available in full text will be excluded if you do this, just because of the way the library databases work). No books, no book reviews, no articles in popular magazines will be allowed for this assignment. If, even after that restriction, you still have too many sources (like several thousand or more), try additional restrictions. For example, limit the dates to the past two years, or add an additional noun to your search criteria. For example, you might add "assessment" to "athletic performance", or "college" to "online education", or "treatment" to "post-traumatic stress disorder."
3. Find an article that looks interesting, Download the article (so you don't lose it!) and use its Abstract or Summary to figure out what its primary research question is. Examples of research questions include: "how did race relations affect the history of rock and roll/jazz/ hip hop?"; "how are advanced analytics changing basketball coaching?"; "how are online education options affecting students' college choices?"; "what forms of counseling and behavior modification therapies are most effective in treating PTSD?"
4. Once you know the research question, use that to find additional sources. You can use the KeyWords associated with your first article to find others, or type in the additional words from the research question, or move from Compass to a more specific Subject Database. If you're having trouble with this step, now would be a good time to ask a librarian for help by going to the Research Help Desk or using the Chat window by following "Ask Us" button.
5. Put all 4-6 peer reviewed journal article references in APA format into one document, and add your three sentence annotations. One way to do that is to cut and paste once you use the Citation button in a specific source you found using Compass. Another good way to do this is with RefWorks, which I mentioned above: this is a bibliographic service that you all have paid for in your tuition. It's super useful for research generally, and for you guys its best feature that it will make your bibliography for you. Here's how it works: first, on the main library page, scroll down until you find RefWorks. Read the instructions there. You will need to set up a new account unless you have used RefWorks before. Once you have a RefWorks account, you can Export any article you find to RefWorks from inside Compass or another database. This will store it in your account until you delete it (so you won't lose stuff), and will allow you to automatically generate a bibliography of all or a selection of your stored sources. In other words, once you find all the articles you want to use, you just go into RefWorks, press Create Bibliography, select APA, and select a File Type (like Word), and it will send you a full bibliography that you can then just fill in with your annotations.
