QLP Writing Assignment 2 Can the Words Presidents Use in Speeches Move Public Opinion His Favor?
If presidential leadership is the ability to get programs enacted, then there is a need to understand how Presidents accomplish their goals. In your paper, you will translate the theoretical concept of presidential leadership (as shown in a speech outlining a course of action to the American people) into data that can be measured, visualized, and graphed statistically.
You have to read the uploaded files which are , the first the first assignment of QLP, which I have written it before ( it was not perfect and I got 78% from 100%, so you don't have to use everything from it). then you will use the data you collected about President Obamas( which I wrote it and upload it) next, use of various words and phrases in his speech to argue whether or not the words and phrases the President emphasized made a successful case for action in Syria.
QLP Assignment 2
By using speeches to go directly to the voters, Presidents can bypass Congress and rally voters to their point of view. Political scientists refer to this process as going public. If voter support for the Presidents views increases, that opinion change may serve to influence Congressional votes or soften criticism of presidential actions. Presidential speeches may use a technique known as framing, where the President defines the issues involved in relation to certain values and ideals that hopefully will appeal to the American people and may contrast with arguments put forth by congressional or other political opponents. These persuasive techniques are designed to influence public opinion and the tone of media coverage relative to the Presidents agenda as set out in his speech.
The Paper
Using your Wordle and analysis of the word/phrase frequencies in Presidents speech on Syria, write a one to two page (double-spaced) paper that identifies ways the President used framing or other persuasive techniques to gain support from the American people. Which of the words and phrases in your Wordle did the president use to emphasize issues and outline his agenda? In what ways did he go over the heads of Congress to persuade the American people? Did President Obama make a good enough case for military action in Syria to the American people? If so, what was it? If not, why not? Make your case based on your findings, NOT on your emotions!
