Researched Argumentative Essay Project p. 253-284
Exercise 7.1-7.15: Planning, Drafting, and Revising an Argumentative Essay.
The final assignment is a research-based argumentative essay following the process and assignments in Chapter 7.
Write a 5-7 page argumentative essay on a topic related to college services, programs, facilities, or curriculum at Methodist University.
We will spend a lot of time working on this in class, including a trip to the library. There are several smaller assignments, both in and out of class, along the way that are a required part of this assignment. They include thesis statements, sources, source analysis, rough drafts, and peer response, among others. Each one is a step in the process of a major research project. Failing to do any particular part will make successful completion of the whole essay more difficult.
The final draft of the paper should be 5-7 pages long, and, in addition to those pages, include a Title Page, Abstract, or Works Cited page. The paper should cite at least 4 and no more than 8 secondary sources. The paper should include the Four Pillars of Argument. The paper may follow Rogerian or Toulmin logic, or may be structured in a different way. The paper should show evidence of logic—both deductive and inductive—and be free of logical fallacies. The paper should be formatted in APA style. The paper should show evidence of revision from the topic and ideas to thesis, evidence, structure and organization, style, grammar, and even title.
Introduction, Outline/Plan, and Source Analysis (10% of the course grade)
Exercise 7.6 – p. 259 – Based on the research you have done so write an introduction to your research paper. Your intro should include your topic, your interest in it, and brief general background. Based on the work done in 7.6, include a thesis statement. If you are unsure of your thesis, you may list theses that you are considering for the paper (no more than 3).
Exercise 7.1-7.4 – p. 254- 258 – Create an outline or a plan for your paper. What major points to do you plan to cover? Include more detailed background of the problem/issue including a description of the problem you are trying to solve / issue you are trying to address; address your audiences (common ground and/or premise, etc.); and evidence supporting your claim. After that, include a brief discussion of what ELSE you need to do to complete your paper: do you need more research? More information from the school? Or do you need to tweak or change your topic?
Exercise 7.10 – p. 26 – Using the information in Chapter 8, begin evaluating your sources for your research paper with exercise 7.10. Gather evidence to research and support your thesis statement, evaluating each source carefully. Be on the lookout for bias in your sources. Find and analyze 4 sources for your research paper. The sources should be listed alphabetically and in APA style, as they would appear in a Works Cited page. You should have at least 125-150 words of analysis for each source including content, reliability, bias, and anything else you think is relevant. (As an example, this section of the assignment is about 150 words.) Also include some discussion of how the source is useful to you in your paper. Submit it to turnitin.com by 11:59 on the day it is due. You may include more than four sources in your document, but you only need to analyze four.
Rough Draft (5% of the course grade)
Exercises 7.12 – p. 265 and 7.14 – p. 273: Using exercise 7.12, revise your thesis statement. Then, using the information on 271-273 and exercise 7.14, write a rough draft of your research paper. The rough draft should be a minimum of 2 pages, not including a Works Cited page. (Abstract, Title Page, and Works Cited are not required at this stage, but may be included if you like.) The rough draft should include the thesis you have been working on. The rough draft can be a continuous 2 or more pages, up to a complete draft of 5-7 pages, or a combination of paragraphs and outline points. You can include secondary sources or not. So long as it is 2 complete pages, it will be acceptable.
The draft must be submitted to turnitin.com by 11:59 the day it is due AND three paper copies must be brought to class on the day it is due, or no credit will be given.
Revision Plan (5% of the course grade)
p. 274-276: After peer response and my response to your plan/draft, and considering the information (esp. the checkboxes), create a revision plan for your essay. What do you need to do to finish your paper? How will you go about it? This should be 1-2 pages double spaced. You do not need a Works Cited, Title, or Abstract page. This is NOT a draft of your paper, but a thoughtful reflection on how you will finish the project. You may include your new/revised introduction, if you have one.
The draft must be turned into turnitin.com by 11:59 the day it is due AND three paper copies must be brought to class on the day it is due, or no credit will be given.
Final Draft
The final draft of the essay should be 5-7 pages long, plus a title page, abstract page, and works cited page (8-10 pages total). The paper should be in APA style (this includes the document format: title page, abstract, Works Cited page, in-text citations, quotes, paraphrases, spacing, margins, headers, section breaks, page numbers, etc.). For information on correct APA style, see Appendix B in our textbook, your Writing Intensive textbook, and/or, the Perdue OWL website. The paper should show evidence of revision (argument, thesis, organization, evidence use, etc.) and proofreading (grammar errors, style, APA format, etc.).
