Assignment: Professional Article Response Why: Professional reading is a responsibility of every educator. The Framework for Teaching, Domain 4 describes a proficient teacher this way: The teacher seeks out opportunities for professional development to enhance content knowledge and pedagogical skill. How: Select an article from the Reading Teacher, a journal published by the International Literacy Association that addresses one of the following topics: Phonological awareness Phonemic awareness Phonics Orthography/spelling Fluency Be sure that the article is thoughtfully chosen. It should be an area of particular interest to you, or perhaps a concept about which you need more clarification or examples. Resist the tendency to write about the first article you find that fits the topic. Also resist choosing “mini-features” that are sometimes in Reading Teacher and might be book lists, or short instructional ideas. Instead, choose a substantive article carefully and make the assignment worthwhile to you and your future teaching career. The easiest way to access articles is via the Albertson Library internet site. There are many easy to use databases, which will give you quick access to full-text electronic articles. Be sure to narrow your search to articles in the journal titled Reading Teacher, and 2005 or newer.
