Instead of having the board drawn explicitly with 64 table data items, have a JavaScript function that draws the board. If you look at the way the memory area of the CARDIAC simulator is handled, you'll see one way to do this.
Verify there's actually a piece that's being moved when the user enters a move. If the starting square is empty, then pop up an alert to ask the user to enter another move.
Support en passant captures.
Support castling.
Support pawns being advanced to the 8th rank and converted into another piece.
Support the way algebraic notation is really used.
