Respond to two of the following writing prompts. Each essay should be about 1 page in length. Use a minimum of 4 quotations from the novel as examples in each essay.
Explain how the long history of racist incarceration in America is one of the most important contextual elements affecting characters in the novel.
2. The novel proposes multiple distinct ideas about death, the afterlife, ghostliness, and time. While these ideas remain largely mysterious and at times appear contradictory, it is clear throughout the narrative that the dead play an important role in the world of the living in multiple ways. How is the connection that exists even between family members who are not alive at the same time used in Sing Unburied Sing?
3. The novel plays on ideas about home and homecoming, while suggesting that “home” is not necessarily a physical place but a more spiritual condition of rest and belonging. Explain how this is shown through at least two characters.
4. Sing, Unburied, Sing deals directly with themes of feeding, healing, and care. Sing, Unburied, Sing pays close attention to the daily practice of caring for others, showing this to be both a form of love and a (sometimes punishing) form of labor. Explain how caregiving is used in both of these ways in the novel.
