Instruction
What the teacher wants: Begin by introducing your primary source’s main argument. This is where you are showing the larger conversation taking place and what you are, therefore, responding to in your paper. Once you have established a clear position, support your position through sound reasoning and evidence. You can keep returning to the author’s argument, responding to different aspects that you wish to refute or expand upon. Or you can carefully build your argument and return to your “yes/no/ok, but” position in your final paragraphs. A strong paper will begin by stating succinctly and fairly the positions that have been defended and that make up the conversation you’re joining. Your goal is to persuade your reader why it is important to agree that porn is degrading, but feminist porn is not.
