You will use the same organization that you used for your Profile, identifying a SINGLE challenge that the organization faced. You have the option of using a past challenge but or a current challenge as long as you can describe and analyze how the organization is meeting that challenge.
You will participate in a group interview in class or at an arranged time by the professor with a representative of your organization. Please begin thinking of the issue faced NOW so that you know how best to address your inquiries to the organization.
PURPOSE AND AUDIENCE: Case Studies are written to document how organizations faced challenges (whether successfully or not) and what other organizations can learn from them. Keep this in mind as you write.
CONTENT AND STRUCTURE: The written Case Study should be divided into the following parts:
• INTRODUCTION: 1-2 paragraph concise overview (about a page)
o Provide a brief profile of the organization. This should include two general sentences that provide distinctive features独特的特性 of this organization relevant to the challenge: type (e.g. 501 c 3, B Corp etc.), mission, location, target audience, important programs, size, artistic discipline etc.
o Nature of the Challenge: Introduce the challenge you have chosen to focus on for this organization. Use the following structure to describe your purpose and relevance:
This Case Study ACTIVE VERB (examines/explores/looks at/analyzes) how NAME OF ORGANIZATION ACTIVE VERB to THE CHALLENGE YOU IDENTIFIED. For example,
“This Case Study examines how Jeni’s Ice Cream successfully recovered from the voluntary recall of all ice cream products they initiated in 2015 because of the possible presence of Listeria.”
o Methods used: Briefly in one to two sentences describe your research methods (e.g. interview and secondary research), listing your interview questions in an Appendix.?
Example: “Research Sources include newspaper articles, FDA reports, personal interviews, case studies and website blog posts.”
• CONTEXT and RESULTS (FINDINGS):
o Describe the nature of the challenge the organization faced more completely and explain the approaches the organization has taken to meet these challenges
o Clearly explain the responses from the interviewee and secondary resources, focusing on how the organization met the identified challenges
o Use external sources to frame this challenge? within the larger academic and professional conversation. Present who else has had a similar problem and how did they address it?
• ANALYSIS of FINDINGS: (swot, pestle)
o Analyze how the organization’s profile influenced the ways in which the challenge was met
o Discuss strengths and weaknesses of the ways in which the challenge was met, drawing on existing research to assist you in evaluating the approach. You could use other published case studies and secondary research that discuss a similar problem/solution or on academic/professional texts that discuss effective strategies for addressing the same type of problem/challenge.
• CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS:
o Were the strategies used by the organization effective or not? (YES) If not, suggest alternative or future courses of action that the organization might have taken or could take to meet this challenge. Draw on existing research to inform your suggestions. You could use other published case studies that discuss a similar problem/solution or on academic/professional texts that discuss effective strategies for addressing the same type of problem/challenge.
