3 pages case study It is hard to provide perfectly general directions for what a case solution should include since each case describes a specific situation. Nevertheless, a few recommendations will be relevant for most cases that describes a decision problem for a firm:
1. Think of the case write-up as a memo to the CEO or the board. The memo will be used by this or these persons as important input in the decision making. Since most readers of a memo are severly time-constrained the length should only be a couple of pages in total. Supporting tables and figures can be added at the end. But do noty include tables or figures without writing briefly in the text what they show.
2. Start out by describing the nature of the decision problem the manager faces. (One paragraph) You may also want to describe other issues raised by the case which will not be addressed `at this time` since they are not directly relevant for your decision problem.
3. Follow up with your recommendation with respect to the decision
4. The longest section is the analytical part of the memo where you describe why you arrive at the decsion. This is the section possibly supported by tables and figures.
5. After motivating your decision it may be useful to point out particularly important assumptions behind the analysis. Sensitivity analysis using alternative scenarios based on different asumptions can be useful in this part.
6. You may or may not need a concluding section pointing, for example, towards need for additional information of importance for the decision. Otherwise, you already have the main conclusion in the decision up front.
The case questions you sometimes receive should serve as a guide and not as a table of content for the case write up.
