Assignment Part I: Conduct an ethnographic observation. 1. Please review class materials relevant to ethnographic observation. 2. Select a site to study. You will have to use care in selecting a location where you yourself are relatively unobtrusive and where you can manage to take notes. This may include o Supermarkets, Restaurants/Cafes, Leisure Time Centers – Skate Parks, Sporting Events, Bowling Alleys, Parks, Stores – Department, Furniture, Discount, Book Stores, Campus Meetings/Events, Subways/Train Stations/Bus Stops, Courts, Waiting Rooms/Lobbies – Hotels, Emergency Rooms o Allow 90 minutes to observe a single setting where people interact. Record basic information about the setting, as well as who, what, when, and for how long you observed particular events and activities. Field notes should include descriptive and reflective notes, and drawing(s) diagramming the setting and important features.
