Instruction
Part Two Over the centuries, biblical commentators (including Rashi, Ibn Ezra and Geshonides – see Eliezer Shulman’s book listed in the syllabus under "Chronology Readings") have attempted to explain the chronological contradictions found in the Book of Kings. With the discovery of the Pre-Classical civilizations of the ancient Near East, modern scholarship has been able to break new ground in trying to make sense of the chronological data in Kings. Tadmor has been one of the major contributors in this area of scholarship. Although there have been later treatments of the chronological issues (for one of the latest attempts, see Galil’s work), I suggest that you start with Tadmor’s work because it explains the arsenal of “tools” that have been used in trying to make sense of the chronological data in Kings. After a careful reading of Tadmor's article, "Chronology of the First Temple Period," in the World History of the Jewish People, vol 4, please: Offer descriptions of the different “tools” in his arsenal; 2. Evidence for the use of each of the above practices in Israel, Judah or the ancient Near East: State the Biblical evidence for such chronological practices having been is use, noting whether the Biblical evidence is explicit or implicit from the Bible itself or whether the practices are only found in ANE sources.
