Discussion—Evolution of Sensation and Perception Processes We use our sensory systems to perceive the world around us. Sensory and perceptual processes are generally taken for granted until something happens to disrupt them. However, we may not have always had such accurate sensory and perceptual processing. Evolution has been critical in the development of highly specialized sensory systems. Animals in different environments have to respond and adapt to different stimuli and challenges. Therefore, different animals are selectively sensitive to different stimuli. For example, humans can tell very accurately where a sound is coming from due to their binaural sensory skills. Elephants can hear extremely low-pitched sounds. Bees are sensitive to ultraviolet light because it helps them find flowers. Evolution is an ongoing process that occurs over the course of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of years. In 500,000 years, humans may develop night vision! Using the textbook and module readings, and the Internet, research the evolution of accurate sensory and perceptual processes. Based on your research, respond to the following: Explain the difference between sensation and perception. Explain the importance of the evolution of accurate sensory and perceptual processes. Many people who do not have, or have lost, the ability to use one of their sensory systems report an increased acuity in other sensory systems. Give your opinion on why it is evolutionarily important to compensate the loss of one sensory system with an increased ability in other sensory systems. Write your initial response in 300–500 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
