For this research project you will explore situations of marginalization and the related social entrepreneurial efforts to bring about justice. Specifically, you will select one of the three types of marginalization discussed throughout the course: race and ethnicity; sex and gender; socio-economic class. Your research will have an explicit global/comparative focus as well. You will include your own country and then two other countries from a different geopolitical region of the world (see list below). The entire project contains two distinct assignments: a research essay and a research presentation (see details below). Reminder: Your assignments will automatically be submitted to Turnitin when you submit them in Canvas. Therefore, I highly recommend that you submit each assignment a day or two early to help you determine if all material has been properly cited. This will provide enough time for you to correct any citation errors that may occur. If you need help understanding the Turnitin report, please contact me in a timely manner. Remember that I am one of your resources; come see me or contact me early and often for additional assistance with your research project! Marginalization, the social entrepreneurial efforts to address it, and whether or not justice is/was achieved are the focal points of this project. In essence, you are to compare and contrast marginalization, two related social enterprises and justice in the two countries of your choice. Some key questions to guide your research and subsequent analysis are: Who is being marginalized and how is the marginalization demonstrated? Why is the marginalization happening; what are the causes or reasons for it? Who is doing what with respect to social entrepreneurship in these two countries to help reduce this form of marginalization? Describe these social entrepreneurs, their social entrepreneurial ventures and their operations? Have these social entrepreneurial efforts been successful; that is, has justice been achieved in the realm of the social issues they are attempting to tackle? Why or why not? What other type of social entrepreneurial efforts could be pursued and how? How are the related ideas of freedom, equality and power exhibited in conjunction with the marginalization, related social entrepreneurship and justice? Remember that this is a compare/contrast analysis. You should not merely describe the situation in each of the four countries. Also, while you will need to familiarize yourself with basic information – size, location, etc. – for each country, that information should not be included in the paper. The Research Process Begin by selecting one of the three types of marginalization: Race and Ethnicity Sex, gender and sexual orientation Socio-economic Class In addition to your own country, select two additional countries from the different geopolitical regions (listed below), and that is not from the same region as your country. Africa Asia Central America & the Caribbean Europe & North America Middle East South America Conduct research to identify potential sources that address the areas of: type of marginalization nature of marginalization in each of the four countries historical, cultural, political, etc. dynamics in each of the four countries social entrepreneurial activities in each of the three countries Identify possible required course material that may be relevant for your project based on the type of marginalization and countries selected. Complete the assignments associated with the research project: essay and presentation (see below). The Assignments Final Project Essay – (100 pts). The final paper should be a thorough and well-argued analysis that addresses the key questions listed in the “Substantive Content” section above. The research sources and related course material (if applicable) should be explicitly integrated into your analysis. The final paper also should reflect the feedback from the all previous research project assignments and meetings with me. It should be a minimum of 8-10 pages, double spaced with 1” margins. Please remember to use the APA Style Manual in preparing your paper. Proper citation technique is expected throughout the paper.
