MUST BE ABLE TO COMPLETE IN AN HOUR OR LESS. Answer ONE of the following question and use supporting details/citations. Must be at least 4-5 paragraphs (500-700 words).

Consider the slave narratives by Harriet Jacobs and Frederick Douglass. What are the characteristics of these narratives and how do they differ from other works that object to slavery, including Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address” and Grimke’s “Appeal to Christian Women of the South?” Both Hawthorne and Poe explore the connection between the mental and physical in their respective works “The Birth-Mark” and “Fall of the House of Usher.” Explain how each author deals with this mind/body connection and the sociological factors surrounding their works. In other words, what was happening in the world that influenced each work? Using our assigned readings and introductory material from the Norton Anthology, explain the relationship between the abolitionist movement and the fight for women’s rights. How did these causes serve each other and how did they compete? Which of our assigned texts speak to these causes and how? Throughout our readings, Native Americans, African Americans, and Women all write to attain the same rights as white males in the U.S. White male authors, on the other hand, turn inward and focus on self (for the most part). Choose one author from each group and explain how he or she crosses over these boundaries. For example, Whitman turns inward and writes in support of equality (you can’t use that one).
