Instruction
During class we will discuss and practice several techniques that are used to manage stress; you’ll find many of these techniques described in the book. Each week I will assign a technique to practice daily throughout the week. Begin your practice sessions by Wednesday, August 28, 2018. As we progress through the semester, you should keep track of how successful your practice sessions have been.
Periodically you will post a response to a discussion item on Canvas to share with the class about how your practices are coming along. Your discussion posts will be worth 10 points each. To help you prepare for your discussions, consider the items noted below.
Have you been successful in practicing the relaxation techniques daily?
What barriers to practicing are you discovering and how are you managing those barriers?
Thus far, what technique have you enjoyed, or what technique has worked the best for you; after completing the technique, which one left you feeling the best? Why?
Which technique has been the most difficult in which to engage? Why?
Who or what has been the most supportive or helpful in allowing you to really focus on engaging in the practice sessions? How has that occurred?
I would strongly recommend that you track your practice sessions in some manner – this can simply be a written log or an excel sheet you create. The book has a tool on page 281 that can be adapted for this purpose if you would like to use that. You may also be able to find an application on your Smartphone that meets your needs. There are MANY applications that can be used to assist you with tracking your activities. If you need ideas, surf the internet or ask me. While it is not required, using a tracking devise or tool is known to be directly correlated with successful outcomes.
On December 5th, you will submit a report describing your overall experience with the practice experiences (80 points). The report will be three-five pages long, and should summarize your answers to the questions noted in item 3 above. Additionally, your final report should respond to the questions listed below.
What relaxation technique did you enjoy the most? Why? Was this also the technique that worked the best in managing stress for you?
Which technique was least beneficial to you, and why?
Did you use a tracking tool? If so, what type of tracking tool did you use (including stats. or sample pages from your tracking tool will be helpful), and why did you choose this tracker?
If you did not use a tracking tool, was there a reason you choose not to, and how did you monitor your progress?
How did you overcome barriers, and what adjustments did you need to make over the semester to defeat these?
How important were your support systems in accomplishing success?
Do you have any plans to integrate any one of the techniques into your daily life moving forward? Which one and why?
What did you or did you not enjoy about this activity?
