In 1958 Herbert Blumer contended that Racism is a product of a group position. He contended that it is a historical product and that prestige, power and skill acquisition define the dominant/subordinate position of racial groups and subsequent experience may intensify or weakened the sense of group position. The authors of White-Washing Race, build on Blumer’s insight by showing how pervasive white privilege is and illuminating examples of the accumulated racial advantages/disadvantages manifest in structures such as the legal system, health care system, the structure of real estate or housing system and consumer market activity at the beginning of the 21st Century. Explain how this position diverges from the view that prejudice is an individual feeling that has lessened over time. Elaborate on two of the structural forms in which accumulated advantages/disadvantages are most pronounced.
