Compare and contrast, explain and evaluate utilitarianism and Kantian ethics. In addition to including your understanding of ethics generally, distinguish the two by applying the criteria discussed in class. What do the two theories have in common? Include—without letting it overwhelm your essay—an application of a particular moral issue. What if anything does this application show about the theories philosophical differences? (For our purposes, "explain" means to state the theory and to describe the important features of the theory in a manner that an intelligent but uninformed reader would understand. For our purposes, "evaluate" means (1) to determine whether or not the theory rests on a sound or cogent argument, and to (2) determine the overall plausibility of the theory. In this context, "plausibility" refers to the strengths and weaknesses of the theory). You might want to review the rubric and other information about essays in the Syllabus. Your paper should be approximately 4-5 pages, APA style double spaced and include several references.
