Over the course of the semester, you have been exposed to many different ways of accessing and developing understandings of the past, from works of scholarship by professional historians (The Victory with No Name and Celia, A Slave) to historical fiction (Will Poole’s Island) to musical theater (Hamilton: An American Musical) to Wikipedia (“Alexander Hamilton” and “Aaron Burr” entries) to articles in popular magazines (articles on “health reforms”) to primary source documents (The Infortunate and the state declarations of secession) to graphic novels (Rebels) to documentary film (The Abolitionists) to a podcast (Uncivil). Consider three of these types of source material and write an essay in which you discuss their advantages and disadvantages. What is the value, for example, of learning about history from the work of a historian as opposed to learning about it from primary source materials? How would you compare fictional portrayals of the past with more evidence-based portrayals.
