The purpose of the assignment is to familiarize you with the recent works of two scholars, Brettler and Halpern, who have written about their understandings of Biblical historical literature. Part One: When reading the introductory sections from their books, please keep the following Focus Question in mind: How does each scholar appreciate and understand the nature of "historical" writing in Biblical historical books? Please skim the material and focus on each of the scholar's views of "historical narratives" in these books. Feel free to pick out salient quotes from the readings which characterize each of their positions. These selections include the beginning and concluding remarks of the authors in their studies on Biblical Historiography as specified in the course syllabus.
