Medical Sociology
Learning Activities: Choose one of the following. Complete it in a 1 - 3 page paper using the guidelines given above.
Option 1: Critical Issues Related to AIDS
Using the summary given on pages 43 - 51 and the websites given on page 53, write a 3 page paper indicating what you believe are the three most critical issues related to HIV/AIDS and what you believe might be the future scenarios for each of these issues.
Option 2: Issues of Incidence and Prevalence
Pick a disease or condition not already described in detail by your text and investigate the incidence and prevalence figures for several years. Do as you book does and compare several different time periods (i.e., 1950 and 2000). What historical, societal or medical factors might account for the differences? What predictions do you make for the future? You might find it helpful to check out the CDC websites given in Chapter 3 as well as searching the issues of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/
Option 3: Interview
Interview a healthcare worker at "One World Health Center", Charles Drew Health Center, the Chicano Awareness Center or one of the agencies serving Native Americans in the Omaha area. Create a list of 10 questions that address the primary issues and population groups that they are serve. Also find out what services does the agency provide and what plans do they have for expanding their services. How are they funded? About how many clients do they serve in a week or month? and so forth. Write a two - three page report of this contact. Be sure to include the name and title of the person you interviewed. Include your list of questions.
