Question 1: Citizens seem to take only a surface level interest in public policy. What might increase citizens' level of interest and participation in public policy? What would motivate you to become more active?
Responds 1: Citizens seem only to be involved when it comes to controversial topics, such as abortion, illegal immigration, health care, and the death penalty. However, there are many policies that may seem to have no benefit towards society that are being signed and implemented, under the radar. Citizens are the stakeholders for policies, they are the public good that needs to be taken advantage of to ensure success (Daley, 2008). Citizen involvement has its advantages towards policymakers, including getting their policy out into the public. Social media is a great tool for transferring information from one person to the next, when used correctly. Start the conversation with the youth. Today, the youth are passionate about governmental issues, including public policy. A great example was during the 2016 election, when an outstanding amount of millennials came out to vote, speak, and rally for and against specific issues. Even after the 2016 elections, millennials started to take the reins of social reform and stand up against opposing parties after tragic events like mass shootings.

Responds 2: Citizen interest in policy has been a very recent trend that has grown. Typically, I have seen people get involved when it involves them or affects them negatively. Furthermore, this has also become a party drawn line for the way the policy may be determined. For example, conservative run states will tend to have informal involvement in the policy outreach (Daley, 2008). As publicized as the news and media have made the polarization, the public may be getting fed false narratives to drive the agenda on the network of choice. While public interest should be the driving force behind positive change, the current political climate allows for both sides to disagree for the simple reason of not agreeing with the party, not the policy. The government representatives are voting the same way which does not help our country. I would become more active in policy if there was the ability to have productive dialogue. The changes cannot happen when the polarized sides are not willing to make positive changes that benefit everybody. I have lost a lot of confidence in the governments that are supposed to be on the side of the people. I feel that the lobbyists, and majority will determine the outcome of the policy. This is where the public must rise up, be involved, and decide to make positive changes that force their hand.

Question 2: What are the ethical implications of Citizen’s United? The Court has said it is legal for corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money to influence public policy. In a democratic republic, is it ethical that accumulated wealth can and does influence public policy
