Instruction
Part one (outbreak)
1- Watch the PBS special” Outbreak” ( Elaborate on 3)
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/outbreak/
using many examples from the movie, add a new post and elaborate on the following (minimum of 400 words)
a) Ebola was first identified in 1976, but the most recent outbreak, by far, was not the most widespread and resulted in the most deaths. Why do you believe past Ebola outbreaks were not as widespread?
b) The movie taught us many lessons about the mishandling of the recent Ebola outbreak. What do you believe could be done differently in a future outbreak? Feel free to discuss the roles of the governments of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, the citizens of those countries, the world health organization and the Doctors without Borders.
c) Some people thought it was dangerous to bring Ebola-infected health care workers into the Unites States for treatment. What are your thoughts? Should this be allowed in future outbreak? Do you believe this could be cause and outbreak in the United States? How might an outbreak in the US be handled compared to how it was handled in west Africa.
2- Create a discussion about the outbreak (like what do you think out its par example) then answer yourself twice (like you answered two different person) agree or disagree. Elaborate, share your opinion. (200 words).
Part two (the trouble with antibiotics)
Watch the PBS special” the trouble with antibiotics”
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/ trouble with antibiotics /
using many examples from the movie, add a new post and elaborate on the following (minimum of 400 words)
a) In your opinion, is it right to feed antibiotics to health animals? If not, what would be the alternative? Discuss the pros and the cons of this issue.
b) Should famers be required to report antibiotics use on their farms? What should be the FDA’s role? Should they have more oversight?
c) The movie mentions the drug resistant bacterium “KPC” but doesn’t discuss it in much in detail. Do some additional research on the internet (using credible sources such as the CDC’s website) on KPC. What is it, what type of infections does it cause, etc.? Don’t just list characteristics of the organism but discuss them as if you are teaching other students about the organism. Be sure the information is put in your own words to avoid plagiarism.
2- Create a discussion about the outbreak (like what do you think out its par example) then answer yourself twice (like you answered two different person) agree or disagree. Elaborate, share your opinion. (200 words).
Part tree (Calling the Shots)
Watch the PBS special” Calling the Shots”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqbH40Y9XJw
using many examples from the movie, add a new post and elaborate on the following (minimum of 400 words)
a) Let’s say a virus for HIV was discovered and it would prevent approximately 1.5 million deaths worldwide each year. However, like all vaccines, it came with risks of side effects and could cause as many as 50 deaths each year. Should we use it? What if the vaccine cause 1000 or 10000 deaths each year? Discuss your thoughts on the “cost- benefits” of this vaccine.
b) What should the government’s role (local, state or federal) be in getting people vaccinated? Should it be more forceful and remove “personal belief exemption”? or should it let parents make their own decisions regarding vaccination?
c) Often, parents that don’t vaccinate do so for religious reasons. Do you think religion or personal beliefs should be a reason to withhold medical interventions in a child? To help answer that question, let’s imagine a scenario where we have two infants living in two different homes. Both infants spike a high fever.in one home, the child die because mother is passed out drunk and neglects the baby. In the other home, the child di because the mother withholds medication because she belongs to a strict religious sect who believes only in prayer for illness. Keep in mind, in both examples, the baby died from same preventable illness. Do you believe either parent should be prosecuted? Or neither parent should be prosecuted? Explain your answer.
