• Every project has a set of stakeholders—people who have a direct interest in the project. Stakeholders may have different interests in the project. What do you think are some of the primary interests of each stakeholder? If two people in any environment have different interests about the same object, and these interests are opposite, problems are bound to arise. Give an example of a project where two stakeholders have different interests. In your example, what are the interests that generate conflict? Suppose you are a project manager. Explain how you’ll handle these problems or conflicts. Which of these problems can be avoided early on? Which ones do you believe are impossible to avoid? Give rationale to support your answers. The Project Charter is a result of the initiation phase. This document provides formal approval for the project to begin and authorizes the project manager to apply resources to the project. What should be included in the project charter and what value does it add to the overall project? • The WBS is a great management tool for projects. How would you communicate the importance of the WBS to the average worker that is being impacted by the project? What elements should and should not be in a WBS and why? Communication is essential during any project. Draft a communication plan to make a department of 100 users aware that their desktop computers will be upgraded to the newest version of Windows over the weekend and they need to back up all files. How would you get them excited about this change in your communication? • Incorporating quality into a product is not an easily managed element of project management. Several topics from many discipline areas, such as software engineering, play a role in this aspect of projects. How can the project manager keep track of the quality of the process? When should the project manager sacrifice quality to keep the project on track? Is quality only a concern for the project manager? Provide a rationale to support your answer. What are some of the drawbacks that may hinder the successful performance of the project in accordance to the baseline plan that may arise from strict quality standards? Risk is associated with every endeavor. It is the responsibility of the project manager to consider risk and its effect on the project. Part of the project manager’s job is to anticipate possibilities that may be quite remote. What is the role of risk assessment in project management? Where do you think the project manager should draw the line when creating a risk register? When should the project manager stop creating a “Plan B,” a “Plan C,” or even a “Plan D”? Justify your answers. • A project manager may face different types of problems while handling the project. Describe the different types of problems that may exist within a project. Are all of these problems handled by the project manager? How do these problems come into existence and become dangerous for the project? How can you resolve these problems? Provide rationale to support your answer. Conflict in teams is inevitable. If the conflicts are handled correctly, they can prove to be beneficial for the team. According to you, what could be some potential benefits of the conflict? Describe a situation hypothetical or real where conflict can help or has helped improve the team work and benefited a project. • Controlling a project is a task that the project manager should not underestimate. Such control can be achieved through many tools and techniques that have been discussed during lecture. Commitment to a project is a factor that cannot be manipulated directly by the project manager. A team member with a high sense of commitment may be an extremely valuable asset, just like a member with no commitment can endanger the entire endeavor. What are some factors that influence the commitment of team members? What are the ways in which the project manager can interact with the committed team members? Are there any differences between the commitment to the project and the one to the team? Among the many activities that should be performed while closing a project, a truthful self-assessment from the project team should be conducted. How do you think a project manager should conduct such an assessment? How should the lessons learned be implemented in order to improve the team’s performance in the next project? Should the project manager weigh everyone’s response to these assessments in the same manner? If not, what role do you believe the project manager should have in acknowledging certain assessments more than others? What criteria would dictate such discriminations?
