In the textbook and lectures, we have reviewed several generally accepted
indicators of sociopolitical complexity (e.g., Ames & Maschner on Northwest
Indian groups; Lynne Sebastian on Chaco; Lynn Gamble on Chumash). Using
these criteria, write a short essay on the rise of sociopolitical complexity in one of
the following archaeological regions: the Canadian-American Northwest,
California, or the Southwest. (Hint: Complex societies are typically seen as
sedentary but not necessarily agricultural!)
