Question1- When seeking to learn about leadership, we often focus on those granted formal authority. However, in many domains, those positions have excluded and silenced certain voices - in this country, particularly the voices of people of color, women, people who are experiencing poverty, people from rural areas, people who identify as LGBTQ, and others whom have been disempowered. By necessity, these histories have shaped the identities, strategies, and very nature of leading without authority. Drawing on the examples in the text, or other contexts that are salient to you, discuss how exclusion from formal seats of authority has shaped the leadership and negotiation strategies used by leaders from communities who have not been given formal authority.
Question2
Heifetz states that those who are "perceived as entrepreneurs and deviants, organizers and troublemakers," are those who "provide the capacity within the system to see through blind spots of the dominant viewpoint." What are the connections that you see between disruption, resistance, and protest, and leading without authority? Ground your analysis in an example - from your life or the world around you.
