Instruction
1. Fiction – Literature that tells about imaginary people, places, or events. Fiction can be partial or complete, in some cases, only a part of the story is fiction and the rest may be based on an actual event, person, place, or thing.
2. Nonfiction – Writing that tells about real people, places, and events. There are two main types of nonfiction; Informative and Literary.
a. Informative Nonfiction- Writing that provides factual information. Some examples of informative nonfiction are newspapers, magazine articles, Pamphlets, history and science textbooks, and encyclopedia articles.
b. Literary Nonfiction- similar to fiction, but the characters, setting, and plot are REAL rather than imaginary.
3. Short story – A work of fiction that can generally be read in one sitting. The plot of a short story usually involves one main conflict and solution.
4. Novel – A work of fiction that is longer and more complex than a short story. In a novel, the setting, plot and characters are developed in detail.
5. Novella – A short prose narrative, often with a moral.
6. Play/Drama – A story written for performance. The story is presented through the dialogue and the actions of characters. The written form of a play is called a script. A script includes dialogue, cast of characters and stage directions.
7. Poetry –A type of literature in which ideas, images, and feelings are expressed in rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts. Like authors, poets carefully select words to illustrate certain sounds and meanings. Every word has a purpose. Most poetry is written in lines and grouped into stanzas.
8. Biography – A factual account of a person’s life written by another person.
9. Autobiography – A true story of a person’s life, told and usually written by that person.
10. Essay – A short work of nonfiction that deals with a single subject. The purpose of an essay may be to express ideas or feelings, to analyze a topic, to inform, to entertain or to persuade.
11. Ballad – A poem or song narrating a story.
12. Myth – ancient stories that attempt to explain world mysteries
13. Fable – a short story that teaches a lesson
14. Fairytale – fictional story that usually has folk-lore characters

Directions: Conduct research and identify two examples of each type of genre discussed in the lesson.You may conduct a search at your local library or online. In order to receive full credit for this assignment, you must have a minimum of 2 examples for each of the 14 terms.
