Instruction
"For this assignment you are to write a developed research argument essay. The topic of the paper is up to you, but it should relate to your field of study or a field that is interesting to you. The research should be grounded in relevant, recent trends of study (most sources should be no older than ten years, and less than that for tech fields). However, depending on your topic you may engage with some older sources if they are particularly important to your argument. The best way to go about this is to identify an issue that is present in your field of study and then research what specialists in that field have written on the topic.
Your argument should revolve around a central thesis, backed by claims, and supported by evidence from your sources. It should include quotes and summary from your sources and should follow the techniques in They Say I Say. You are entering into a conversation with other specialists in your field and your writing and engagement with other sources should reflect this.
This essay should not necessarily follow the standard form (Introduction, Body, Conclusion), but should be an organized argument that shows purpose and intent in your writing. I encourage you to use the standard form as a starting point for your organization.
The essay will require proper citation and works cited for your chosen format that is not included in the word count of your essay.
You may use portions of your Argument Analysis Paper (if relevant) in this assignment. In fact, I recommend using your Argument Analysis as a starting point for this paper by identifying the larger conversation your original article joined. Once you identify and explain that conversation, you will be able to respond to it.
While your paper should resemble a scholarly article, you are not writing a fully developed article. Instead, think of your paper as a cover story in a magazine such as Rolling Stone or Time. You should have generally the same information – outside sources, background information, a thesis statement, supporting claims, evidence to support those claims, and a strong conclusion. The important thing to note is that while you are writing within your field, you want the general public to be able to understand what you are writing."
