Background
X State University is beginning to develop educational program assessment plans for their academic and student affairs units. The Bachelor of Science in Accounting program has been selected by the university Leadership Team as the pilot program for this initiative. The university’s president has high expectations that the new program assessment plan will be openly accepted by both faculty and staff and will position the University to respond to upcoming accountability measures. To meet this demand, the president of X State University has decided to hire a director of assessment to lead the institution in the development of a program review model.
The mission of X State University states, “X State University is dedicated to educational excellence. Within a supportive learning environment, faculty and staff are committed to preparing students to be productive citizens by helping them develop academic and professional proficiencies; to think critically; to communicate effectively; and to seek and evaluate information.”
Your Task
You have been hired as the director of assessment at X State University, charged with developing a program assessment model for the pilot program. You have been asked to deliver a written plan (6–7 pages) to the university president and leadership team detailing a systematic and ongoing, comprehensive, and institutionally integrated assessment system. Your written plan should include the following categories, reflected as headings within the body:
Program Description and Mission (Unit 2)
Committee Structure (Unit 2)
Program Outcomes (Unit 3)
Student Learning Outcomes (Unit 3)
Method(s) of Assessment (Unit 3)
Program Benchmarks (Unit 4)
Continuous Improvement (Unit 4)
Program Review Cycle (Unit 4)
Overview of Program Assessment Plan
As Director of Assessment, you have been asked to develop a program assessment model for one of the bachelor degree programs at your institution. The plan you develop will become the model to be used by the university for the subsequent program and departmental assessments. The plan should represent a full academic year cycle to include planning, implementation, assessment, and use of results.
Format:
Length: The project should be 6–7 pages long, and should include title and reference pages (8–9 pages total).
Writing Expectations: Prepare your paper in Times New Roman, 12-point font, with 1-inch margins, following the style conventions of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th edition).
Resources: You should use the course textbooks and supplemental readings to support your work. In addition, you must use a minimum of three peer-reviewed resources to support your work. The Library is the recommended source for your additional resources.
Your completed course project is due midnight Saturday of Unit 6. To help you successfully complete the work on time, the project is broken down into four deliverable assignments. Additional information is available in the assigned unit.
Deliverables:
Unit 2 – Developing the Plan: In 350 words provide a critical analysis of the mission of X State University. In your analysis specifically address how the mission of the program, as stated on the organization chart, is aligned to the student proficiencies that have been described in the overall mission.
Using the Organization Chart, create an assessment committee for the program.
Define the purpose of the assessment for the program.
This task contributes to sections 1 and 2 of your finished project.
Unit 3 – Academic Review: In 350 words discuss your data collection strategies for your project. Continuing with your institution and program, complete the following:
Define the program outcomes and the student learning outcomes
Discuss the method of assessment
Describe the required resources to conduct the assessment
This task contributes to sections 4 and 5 of your finished project.
Unit 4 – Analyzing the Results: In 350 words, discuss your plan for analyzing and sharing the results of your assessment. Continuing with your institution and program, complete the following:
State how you will disseminate the results of your assessment
State how you will use your results for improvement
State how you will benchmark your results and plan for the following academic year
This task contributes to sections 6, 7, and 8 of your finished project.
Unit 6 – Finished project: Submit your completed project, including all sections delivered throughout the course. Your assessment plan should follow the eight point outline previously described. You can use those points as headings in your plan. You will incorporate the work you completed in Units 2, 3, and 4, and make revisions using the feedback received from your instructor and classmates.
