This response has two parts: the first part has four "amazingly" short essays for the reading response. Part two has one website to view and accompanying questions. Basically, this response reviews the materials assigned for each of the writing prompts for this unit (with the exception of the diversity poster option which we practice in the discussion thread) so you can make an informed decision when choosing an option.
Part One:
• Daniel D’Addario’s Everything is Trolling Now” (420) D'Addario Essay
• Simon Dumenco’s “If We’re All So Sick of You, Facebook, Why Can’t We Quit You? (407) Dumenco Essay
• Salvador Rodriguez’s “In the Digital Age, Breaking Up is Hard to Do” (415) Rodriguez Essay
• Richard Rushfield’s “Toward a Unified Theory of How the Internet Makes Everything Terrible” (418) This essay is optional--only the first three are required. Rushfield Essay
Before reading you may want to review the videos and other materials on Rhetorical Appeals and Rhetorical Situation Rhetorical Analysis Links. Remember you will need to cite two sources that discuss the rhetorical appeals and/or the rhetorical situation in your paper (you can use the material from these links).
• Ethos: Ethical appeals establish the credibility and goodwill of the author or of the sources used to support an argument. Where and how does the author explain his or her related background or establish the credibility of the sources used?
• Pathos: Emotional appeals draw on the readers’ emotional response to the subject and on shared beliefs and values. Where does the author use language and/or create images that are emotionally charged?
• Logos: Logical appeals use reasoning and evidence to support an argument. Logical appeals draw on facts, statistics, research, financial costs, observations, and experiments to reach conclusions using logical schema. Where and how does the author use evidence? What kinds of evidence are used? What logical schema does the author draw on to interpret the evidence?
•
Read the essays by D'Addario, Dumenco, Rodriguez, and Rushfield listed above. Then choose one of the essays for Part One of your reading response. Briefly explain how you view the writer's purpose--what are they trying to explain, to inform, to argue? Then briefly explain how the writer uses each strategy (the appeals--ethos, pathos, logos) to develop his or her purpose. One example from the essay for each of the appeals is fine, but you are welcome to discuss more. Analyzing the appeals is something you do every day when you evaluate the credibility of information you receive from friends, family, the internet, and other sources. We are foregrounding the process here as practice for writing your paper.
Use this format for submitting a response to each essay:
Essay Title:
Purpose and audience: State what you see as the author's purpose for writing the essay and who is the intended audience
Ethos: How does the author establish credibility?
Pathos: How does the author use emotion?
Logos: How does the author use evidence and reasoning?
(You are assessing each essay's use of of all three appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos)
Part Two:
Next, view the website BlackLivesMatter.com (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Click "Who We Are" and read the sections "About Us." "Herstory," and "Guiding Principles." Briefly describe, based on your reading of these sections, the organizations key purpose and their audience. Finally, go back to the site's home page, scroll to the bottom and click the instagram icon which looks something like this, but it is yellow and in a circle.
This gives you access to several hundred images and photographs posted by BLM to instagram. Browse the images and select one that best represents the organizations purpose and connects with their intended audience. Briefly explain your selection. Explain how the rhetorical appeals ethos, pathos, logos work in the image as well. Again, the rhetorical analysis links have inofrmation regarding visual arguments. Paste the image into your response if you can. Of course, if you choose this option for your paper, your analysis will be more engaged and detailed.
Submission format:

Purpose: (What is the organizations mission/goal as you interpret the website information?)
Audience: (Who is their intended audience based on your interpretation of the materials on the website?)

Please submit both responses in one document...and you are done!!
